The Ketogenic Diet for Seizure ControlUniversity of Massachusetts The Ketogenic Diet is a specially calculated diet for the treatment of epileptic seizures, either in conjunction with, or in place of, anticonvulsants, most effectively used in children under 10 years old. The diet is one of the oldest forms of therapy for epilepsy but has fallen into disuse because of the availability of new and effective anticonvulsants. However, where modern anticonvulsants are ineffective, or their side effects overwhelming, the Ketogenic Diet often can control seizures completely with few if any side effects in behavior and learning. (The Charlie Foundation, 1994).
